The evangelical faith is defined by the gospel, "that was once for all delivered to the saints."
Christ has died. The gospel is cross-centered. The cross is the only basis for our acceptance with God.
Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The resurrection points us to a sure and certain future, when Jesus will return to judge and to save, and declares Jesus in the present as the Lord of all.
We live in eager anticipation of the coming of the
new heavens and the new earth.
Evangelical
(What's in a name?)
"Scripture cannot be broken". The gospel invites us to surrender our will to the authority of Jesus, and thereby to come under the authority of the Old Testament prophets and of His apostles, as their teaching is preserved for us in Holy Scripture.
"But God, being rich in mercy..." The gospel is full of grace and without any trace of ritualism or moralism. We respond to God's grace with the grasp of faith, which needs to be continually reformed and restored back to the purity of the gospel, so that we may "continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel".
"The Spirit of truth". The gospel calls for repentance, which is marked by a response with a radical change of heart and life. Within the gospel are the promises of forgiveness of sins in Jesus' name; and empowerment by the Holy Spirit to the change of life through repentance. We are united in faith through the proclamation of the gospel.
What is an evangelical? We find the best answer in pondering the gospel itself.
